FEATURED ARTIST FRIDAY: ALEX KISLOV
Moving to the US from Israel at the age of 10, Alex Kislov quickly transitioned to life in the new country. His mother and sister's interest in Electronic music influenced his first musical experience at the early age of seven and eventually lead the way to his calling as an Electronic music artist. Little did he know at that moment that he would go on to become one of Chicago's finest.
What genre would you describe yourself as? Why?
Dance & House music, although I have produced future bass & pop too. I grew up on electronic music my whole life because of my mom & sister.
Tell us something that you’re doing now and are excited about.
Currently I am finishing finishing touches for a remix to a song that I grew up to. I also have an album that I am writing and hoping to release it in 2019. I also have a few more releases coming up on Careless Records.
What artists influence you/do you look up to?
Chris Lake, Above & Beyond, Franky Rizardo
What is your proudest moment so far? (blogged/signed/etc..)
Thus far headlining an international show in Moscow, Russia this past year. Getting signed to Careless records was also a notable moment in my career since they really helped me elevate my music and understanding that side of the business.
What DAW do you use?
I use Ableton.
What are some of your favorite plug-ins?
I'll always be a Nexus fan for its rich piano synth sounds. I enjoy KSHMR sounds a lot too and I find myself getting more into Z3TA+ sounds too.
What is something you cannot leave home without (besides keys, phone, wallet)?
My USB. I'm always in the mood to play, and always ready!
Long days and nights in entertainment can take quite a toll on your body. How do you stay healthy?
I stretch everyday. I attempt to eat healthier and sleep as much as I can on off-nights. Listening to your body is key, and yes pushing yourself too far is a real thing.
If you had to do something else (outside of music), what would it be?
Well I graduated from DePaul University with a degree in health & science. My favorite thing was working in the laboratory and inoculating different bacteria & virus cultures. Science is my second passion and I'd probably be working for Chicago Public Health Department or CDC or something.
What was your favorite show that you've played?
I love every single show that I play. I enjoy playing even if there's 5 people in the room. My most notable show is probably Lviv, Ukraine at a club called Malevich. The people of that town treated me with excellent hospitality .
What’s your current favorite show (tv/Netflix/etc…) worth binging?
I HAVE A NETFLIX addiction. When I binge watch shows I stay up all night watching them. I just finished YOU, Tidelanders and Lucifer all in one week.
What’s the craziest thing that’s happened to you while DJing?
I played on one of the main stages at Spring Awakening a few years ago and got completely tangled in my headphones which made me slip and stop the music. I recovered quickly of course but that was such an intense moment when 3000 people all exclaim at one moment. Puts a lot of pressure on yo. I played it off nicely though so I don't think too many people noticed.
What is a quote or phrase that you try to live by? Why?
There are 100 ways to do it wrong, and only one way to do it right - I think this is such a powerful quote to keep you motivated to keep going when things aren't always running. A lot of times I notice artists doubt themselves or unable to move forward because they think that they hit a wall. That quote tells you to keep failing till you find the right path for you.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
I'll take this opportunity to thank everyone reading this article. It means a lot to me to get such overwhelming support from friends & family and even people I don't know. If it wasn't for these social support systems I don't think I'd ever keep pushing for my dream to come true.
